Turkiye to Deepen Defence Cooperation with Qatar

In a statement on his social media account, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz evaluated his visit to Qatar with the Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek.
Noting that they met with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamed Al Sani, Yılmaz stated that Turkiye-Qatar relations and economic cooperation opportunities were discussed during the productive bilateral and inter-delegation meetings.
Reminding that the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries is celebrated, Yılmaz said they plan to hold the 9th Meeting of the Turkiye-Qatar High Strategic Committee this year and that 95 agreements have been signed in eight High Strategic Committee meetings.
Vice President Yilmaz said:
“Besides the new projects, we aim to deepen our cooperation, especially in the defence industry and energy fields. The steps taken to improve relations between the two countries and strengthen our common interests will yield even more positive results in the future. Strategic cooperation between Qatar and Turkiye, regional stability and “The friendship and cooperation between the two countries will further advance our relations in all fields. I want to express my gratitude to the officials of the State of Qatar, especially Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamed Al Sani, for their hospitality.”
The two countries established bilateral relations in 1972. The two counties increased their cooperation and dialogue on regional and international issues in the 2010s, particularly in the Syrian Civil War and the Egyptian Crisis, as both sides supported the same groups in post-Gaddafi Libya.

The two countries already have strong military ties. Several military cooperation agreements have been signed between the two while Turkiye exports military equipment to Qatar. These exports include BMC’s Kirpi MRAP, Amazon 4X4 and Nurol Makina’s Ejder Yalçın. Anadolu Shipyard exports two OPVs, various amphibious landing crafts and cadet training ships. ARES exports Fast Intervention Craft and Baykar Bayraktar TB2 UAVs.
Qatar exports LNG to Turkiye, while Turkish construction companies work for the Qatari government. Turkiye sent 3000 policemen and TCG Burgazada (F 513) corvette for “Operation FIFA-2022 World Cup Shield”.
