Ukraine Strikes Russian-Guided Bomb Storage

Ukraine Strikes Russian-Guided Bomb Storage

Recently, Ukraine launched an attack on a Russian storage facility for UMPK-winged bomb guidance kits located near the border. The facility holding the UMPK guidance kits for FAB-series bombs was severely damaged following the attack. The airbase in Kushchyovskaya serves as a re-armament point for Russian aircraft. Due to the closeness of the airbase to the conflict zone, the Russian aircraft tasked with bombing will have to rearm at other bases, which might be further to Ukraine. The distance of the base from Ukraine suggests long-range weapons being used, with the type remaining uncertain. Ukraine currently has access to cruise missiles (SCALP and Storm Shadow onboard Su-24 interdictors), ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, HIMARS MLRS, and long-range kamikaze UAVs. UMPK can be integrated on normally dumb-fire FAB bombs to turn them into extended-range strike weapons. The kit consists of a GLONASS+INS guidance system, control surfaces, and extending wings. It can be considered the Russian counterpart to kits like JDAM-ER and KGK. UMPK is stated to extend the range up to 80 km, varying with altitude as with other wing-kits. Russia has also developed a smaller extended-range glide munition named D-30 SN. Being closer to the likes of the GBU-39 Small-Diameter Bomb, it can be dropped from aircraft or launched from BM-30 Smerch MLRS. The range was stated to be 90 km for the bomb, which was similarly guided by GLONASS.
