US Navy Drops Repair Effort for Attack Submarine Overhaul TurDef

The US Navy plans to deactivate the Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Boise (SSN-764) after a decade of no results from repair efforts.

In order to save resources and manpower, the US Navy is letting go of one of the freshest Los Angeles Flight III nuclear-powered submarines (SSN), as reported by USNI News.

USS Boise, not in active service since 2017, was planned to receive a wide-scale repair and overhaul by HII. From that point on, an investment totalling $1.6 billion has been made with no results.

HII stated that the personnel assigned to USS Boise’s overhaul activities will be relocated to other works, ongoing or to be launched. It is speculated that the workforce will be diverted towards other submarines that are more promising in terms of the effort/return ratio.

The pace of the US shipyards has been a concern, even leading to bilateral agreements such as the one with the ROK’s Hanwha to speed up the revitalisation effort in the light of new programmes like the FF(X) frigate and the rather questionable battleship programme that seems to have overshadowed the DDG(X) destroyer programme (Due to the proposed battleship design being an upscaled DDG(X) in terms of firepower and size) under the Trump administration.
