The US Navy’s new Virginia-class submarine USS Massachusetts (SSN 798) enhances fleet readiness with its Block IV features, expanded supplier base and accelerated deployment model.
The USS Massachusetts (SSN 798) represents the seventh Virginia-class submarine built to Block IV standards which enhances US Navy operational readiness through shorter maintenance periods and better deployment readiness throughout its entire service period. The 17.6-billion-dollar contract for ten Block IV submarines between Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat included the USS Massachusetts as its seventh vessel which demonstrates the program's focus on maintaining operational readiness and continuous fleet availability.
The construction timeline demonstrates how the program focuses on readiness through its various milestones. The virtual keel-laying ceremony for the submarine took place on 11 December 2020 before the major hull sections joined together in August 2022 to finish the pressure-hull construction. The platform entered the James River through floating dry dock on 23 February 2024. The submarine underwent systems integration and testing and crew certification at its dedicated outfitting pier after launch to achieve shorter initial operational deployment timelines.
The Block IV submarines operate with a new maintenance system which reduces major depot-level availability from four to three times to achieve more patrols and lower sustainment expenses. The US Navy achieves better undersea dominance in Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions through this capability which provides more submarines ready for tasking at any time. The USS Massachusetts joins the fleet as a deployment-ready submarine which provides intelligence support and strike capabilities and special operations assistance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities for extended periods of time in high-demand maritime environments.
