ASELSAN Integrates AKKOR APS on Leopard 2A4 MBT

ASELSAN Integrates AKKOR APS on Leopard 2A4 MBT

According to ASELSAN’s 2023 Activity Report, Leopard 2A4 MBTs will be the next hosts of the AKKOR turreted active protection system. A crucial production agreement has been signed, paving the way for the integration of the AKKOR APS onto the Leopard 2A4 MBTs. This strategic move is part of Turkiye’s ongoing efforts to modernise its fleet of Leopard 2A4s, enhancing their protection and electronics to meet the demands of modern warfare. Leopard 2A4 modernisation includes add-on armour on the hull and turret, including ERA and cage armour, for increased resistance against ATGMs and rockets. The addition of AKKOR will especially boost protection against top-attack munitions, thanks to the high elevation limit of the munition launchers. AKKOR consists of radars and two-tube munition launchers fitted on the turret. The launchers have a high elevation limit, covering the platform against rocket and ATGM threats in a hemisphere. Other platforms to be fitted with AKKOR are ALTAY MBT and ASELSAN’s KORHAN 35 mm weapon system, which is to be used on the vehicles of the YNZHA IFV procurement programme. Cuestiones Militares has reported that a small batch of the Leopard 2A4 modernisation package for Chile will also include an APS, which might be AKKOR or the fixed-type PULAT.
