ASELSAN has offered a modernisation package for Leopard 1V MBTs following the ongoing Leopard 2 MBT modernisation.
Chilean YouTube channel La Trinchera has reported on its stream about ASELSAN's Leopard 2 MBT modernisation that another package for Leopard 1Vs was offered. Chile will decide after observing the Leopard 2 modernisation process. The package is stated to include a change to a 120 mm smoothbore gun instead of the rifled 105 mm one.
Turkiye already has a history of modernising Leopard 1 MBTs. The Turkish Army's Leopard 1A3s have been modernised to Leopard 1T, which introduced the Volkan fire control system to improve engagement performance. With ASELSAN's portfolio for land vehicles today in mind, it can be assumed that new communication equipment, warning systems, and electro-optics might also be on the table. Leopard 1V is the improved version of the baseline Leopard 1, sold to Chile by the Netherlands in 1997.
The tanks remain unmodernised to this date. In addition to upgrades on offence and sensors, the thin armour compared to today's MBTs necessitates upgrades in survivability. This could be in the form of warning systems and add-on armour if the tanks are to stay in service.
ASELSAN has opened its Latin America office at Chile Santiago in April 2024 showing the company’s interest in the continent.
