Canada to acquire $2.68 billion air-strike weapons package turdef

Canada has requested a major precision-strike and guided-munition package from the United States, including Small Diameter Bombs, JDAM guidance kits and general-purpose bomb bodies, in a Foreign Military Sale valued at an estimated $2.68 billion.

The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale, and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has formally notified Congress. According to the transmittal, the package covers a wide inventory of strike weapons for Canada’s fighter fleet, including up to 3,108 GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb Increment I (SDB-I) weapons, 2,004 GBU-53 SDB-II missiles, 5,352 KMU-572 JDAM guidance sets and large quantities of 500-lb and 2,000-lb general-purpose bomb bodies.

Additional items include 750 GBU-39 inert practice bombs, 100 Guided Test Vehicles for both SDB-I and SDB-II, 146 I-2000 penetrator warheads, 396 KMU-556 and 140 KMU-557 JDAM kits, FMU-139 and FMU-167 fuzes, HTVSF hard-target void-sensing fuzes, DSU-38 laser target detectors, and a broad suite of support equipment. The package also includes training systems, software support, technical documentation, spare parts, and U.S. Government and contractor engineering, logistics and maintenance services.
