The European Union’s Defence and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has issued a stark warning over escalating speculation surrounding Greenland, saying that any attempt by the United States to seize the territory through military force would amount to “the end of NATO”.

Speaking to Reuters on Monday at a security conference in Sweden, Kubilius said such an action would have a “very deep negative impact” on public opinion and would severely damage transatlantic relations.

The remarks come as US President Donald Trump has renewed his insistence that Washington “must own” Greenland — an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark — arguing that it is strategically essential to prevent potential Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic. Trump has also suggested that a permanent US military presence alone would not be sufficient.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Denmark and the United States are now “at a crossroads” over Greenland, after US President Donald Trump once again repeated that Washington “needs” the territory.

Speaking at a New Year meeting organised by the Social Liberal Party in Nyborg, Frederiksen assessed Trump’s remarks and the broader implications for allied unity.

Asked whether Denmark has a plan if the United States were to intervene militarily in Greenland, Frederiksen replied: “We have to address this in a more fundamental way than what appears concrete. We are at a crossroads. This is a moment of destiny.”

She warned that the situation carries risks greater than what may be immediately visible, adding: “The United States is turning its back on the Western alliance and NATO cooperation by threatening an ally. This is something we have never experienced before from the US. If something like that happens, everything stops.”
