European Defence Industry Strechens Muscles

The Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) set up a press conference in Brussels to present its Facts & Figures 2024 report, an analysis of 2023’s performance.

According to ASD figures, employment in the aerospace and defence industries grew by 8 per cent in 2023. The turnover in the industry surged by 10.1 per cent, reaching €290.4 billion, driven by a 17 per cent increase in defence and a 3 per cent growth in civil aeronautics. It is, however, worth noting that the civil aviation industry is the biggest player in the industry. Out of €290.4 billion income, civil aviation has a share of €118.9bn.

Guillaume Faury, ASD President and CEO of Airbus urged the European policymakers to face pivotal choices that will define the economic and strategic future for decades. He said, “Russia’s war in Ukraine has further underscored Europe’s defence vulnerabilities. Years of underinvestment and fragmented national strategies have limited the potential of the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base.”

Reflecting on 2023, Jan Pie, ASD Secretary General, lauded the sector’s adaptability: “2023 underscored our industry’s resilience and adaptability. Bold policies are essential to enhance competitiveness and deliver the innovative capabilities that safeguard Europe’s future.”
