Hamas Leader Haniyeh Dies in Attack in Tehran

Hamas announced that its leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an attack in the Iranian capital Tehran. A statement from Hamas said that Haniyeh was killed in an attack launched by Israel at 02:00 local time. Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported that the residence in question was a building in northern Tehran that serves as a service for veterans under the protection of the Revolutionary Guard Corps. Ismail Haniyeh had attended the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, in Tehran.

Sources speaking to the Saudi television channel Al-Hadath reported that Haniyeh's residence was attacked with a guided missile. The Iranian media, which holds Israel responsible for the attack, claimed, citing sources from the Revolutionary Guard Corps, that the attack was carried out with an air-to-surface guided missile. If the attack was conducted outside Iranian airspace, it would also mean that Isral has the capacity to hit targets at least 450 kilometres away with high precision accuracy. It remains unclear how Israel managed to deceive Iranian air defence and electronic warfare systems for this attack. On the other hand, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Washington was not involved in the attack or had no prior knowledge of it.
