Italy Turns to Plug & Play Minelaying Modules for New Ships TurDef

The Italian MoD is in search of a containerised minelaying system that can be used with current naval mines and integrated on the new ships’ sterns.

The Italian Navy is exploring options for ‘Plug and Play’ minelaying capability for mine countermeasure vessels, support ships, and submarine rescue ships, according to Naval News.

The requirements include the fitting of a minelaying system in two 20 ft containers, with one as the deployment unit and the other as a storage unit for spare mines.

A notable practitioner of containerised minelaying modules can be given as SH Defence with a configuration of its Cube module. Additionally, Finland-based Forcit Defence has developed a similar solution, SUMICO, on which Denmark has expressed interest.
