MİLDEN is in Preliminary Design Phase

The Turkish Indigenous Submarine (MİLDEN) Project is in the preliminary design phase. The project was started to strengthen the Turkish Naval Forces with submarines produced with domestic and national resources. MİLDEN Design Project Office Platform systems Chief Engineer Colonel İzzet Emre Afacan gave information to Anadolu Agency about their work.

According to the interview, the Design Project Office employs 28 personnel at Gölcük Shipyard. Stating that the submarine design process consists of concept, preliminary, control and detail design phases, Afacan explained that they are in the preliminary design stage. Afacan said that the office completed the concept design, and the design received technical approval in January 2022.i

Accordingly, since January 2022, the office has been working on detailing the designs of the primary and auxiliary systems that will take place on the platform. Their dimensions are determined according to the operational needs of the Naval Forces Command. “Domestic and foreign companies are contacted. Design calculations and the main dimensions of the submarine are updated within the submarine design cycle,” Afacan said and added that it is aimed to start the construction by making the first welding at the beginning of 2025 and to complete the construction, test and experience activities by the end of 2031.

Afacan said, “MILDEN is designed as a diesel-electric submarine with a displacement of approximately 2,700 tons, its length is over 80 meters, and it has an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. With the weapons, systems and sensors developed with domestic and national resources, it can stay submerged for a longer time compared to our existing submarines, will have more weapons and will be able to dive deeper to perform its mission.”
