Norway Acquires M107A1 Anti-Materiel Sniper Rifles

Norway will replace its ageing 12.7 mm M82 anti-materiel sniper rifles with the newer M107A1. U.S.-based firearms manufacturer Barett, known for M82/M107 anti-materiel rifles chambered in 12.7x99 mm NATO, has announced the acquisition from Norway on its official website.

M107 started as the U.S. designation of M82 with a range of design changes and was adopted by the firm as a new variant of M82. M107A1, externally the same as M82A1, features a 1.8 kg lighter frame at 13 kg and an integral monopod for better shooting stability. The newer model also accepts suppressors for improved concealment upon need. Barett's M82 and M107 anti-materiel rifles are in use with many NATO/non-NATO countries.

Thanks to the penetration and kinetic energy of the 12.7 mm ammunition, the rifles are used against personnel, field equipment, and lightly armoured vehicles. For the anti-materiel role, the Mk 211 round with high explosive, incendiary, and armour-piercing features has been developed in addition to standard ones. Originally manufactured in Raufoss, Norway, the ammunition continues to be manufactured by the Norwegian Nammo.
