Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Visits Burkina Faso

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in Ouagadougou on a two day long official visit to Burkina Faso. At the airport, Lavrov met with Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso. This 48-hour official visit strengthens bilateral relations between the two countries. The Russian delegation includes several high-ranking figures and will have a working session with the Burkinabe authorities this evening. Minister Lavrov will also be received by the President of Faso,  Ibrahim Traore. The Sahel countries have experienced a power vacuum since they forced former colonial power France to leave the region. Russia’s visit to African countries is, therefore, strategically important. The first batch of Russian soldiers arrived in Burkina Faso in November 2023, followed months later by another group of roughly 100 Russian military advisers.
