The French Navy's Aquitaine-class frigate 'Alsace' is ready for deployment

Alsace is a French Navy (Marine Nationale) frigate designed as part of the Frégate Européenne Multi-Missions (FREMM) multipurpose frigate programme. It is the first of the FREMM class"s two air-defence versions. Lorraine is the other option.

The FREMM European multi-mission frigate is a collaborative French-Italian project. It will construct 21 FREMM frigates for the French and Italian navies.

"The multi-mission frigate Alsace is ready for operations," Parly said on Twitter.

On November 17, Alsace"s operational capabilities were verified with an Aster 30 anti-aircraft missile launch. This marked the beginning of the ship"s active duty.

FREMM frigates offer interoperability and operational preparedness in addition to anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. The frigates can respond to attacks from the air, sea, and land-based threats.

Alsace was launched in April 2019 at the Naval Group shipyard in Lorient, only thirteen months after its keel was laid. It was delivered to the French Navy facility in Toulon in April of this year.
