Turkish MFA: Norway Lifts Defence Industry Embargo

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced that Norway has lifted its military embargo on Turkiye.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli stated that Norway had decided to lift the defence industry restrictions it imposed on Turkiye in 2019.

In a statement shared on his X account, Keçeli mentioned that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone call with his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, where it was confirmed that the embargo on Turkiye’s defence industry had been lifted.

Keçeli’s statement reads as follows: “Today (September 11), our Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a telephone conversation with Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide. Minister Eide conveyed that Norway has decided to lift the defence industry restrictions imposed on Turkiye in 2019. Our Foreign Minister Fidan expressed our satisfaction with this decision, emphasising that such restrictions do not align with the spirit of alliance.”

Although Norway invests primarily in the Oil, fishing and hydropower industries, the country is home to globally recognised defence companies and products. Among these are Kongsberg Gruppen and Nammo, both of which are listed in the Defence Top 100.

Kongsberg is known for its Joint Strike Missile (JSM) and NSM Naval Strike Missile (NSM), while Nammo produces a wide range of ammunition, from 5.56 small calibre rounds to 155mm large calibre.

Norway initially imposed a defence embargo on Turkiye in 2019 in response to Turkiye’s military operations in northern Syria.
