Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan and US Secretary Marco Rubio held their first face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

US Secretary Spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that two political figures met to discuss ways to strengthen further U.S.-Türkiye relations, shared interests in the region, and growing bilateral trade. Bruce said, “Secretary Rubio emphasised the need for close cooperation to support a stable and unified Syria that is not a threat to the United States, Türkiye, or the region. The Secretary noted Türkiye’s leadership in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, our joint efforts to support a just and lasting peace in the South Caucasus, and our shared objective of ending Russia’s war on Ukraine."

On the other hand, Turkish sources provided more details about the Israeli-Gaz developments. It stated that Foreign Minister Fidan emphasised the necessity of a long-term cease-fire in Gaza, saying that settling the Israel-Palestine problem is critical to regional peace, according to a foreign ministry source.

It is stated that Fidan informed Rubio that Turkiye opposes Trump’s plan to deport over two million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, claiming US authority and transforming it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
