Turkiye and Portugal have joined the Multi-National Ammunition Rehousing Initiative (MAWI) to improve ammunition stockpiling management.
The MoU for MAWI was signed in 2021 with the participation of Belgium, Estonia, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, and Norway. The initiative also includes cooperation with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency ( NSPA). Currently, there are 26 participants in the initiative, with Turkiye and Portugal having joined.
The initiative is described as streamlining stockpilings through joint facilities and regulations configurable for participants’ needs.
MAWI is expected to provide reduced stockpiling costs, scalability, and swifter support of NATO operations with a joint stockpiling solution.
This initiative falls well within the goals of European countries to refill and expand their ammunition stockpiles following the large-scale aid to Ukraine and the sight of how rapidly ammunition is depleted in a war. The joint nature of MAWI allows for cooperative stock refilling, reducing the logistical strain in the field. For example, one member running low on 155 mm shells can receive from another parallel with the local production.
