Ukraine Develops Light Polymer Belts for PK Machine Gun TurDef

To address the ammunition belt weight issue on PK-type machine guns in use, Ukraine has developed polymer belts that are lighter and cheaper than metal ones.

UDI Group of Ukraine came up with the idea of developing polymer belts for PK machine guns that might take a significant load off dismounted machine gunners by replacing the conventional metal belts, which are not only heavier but also costlier and riskier.

Considering the weight of metal belts meant to withstand the intense heat of firing, polymers show promise in weight savings. Additionally, polymers are easier to manufacture, which has the potential to lower costs and production volume.

The Place of PK Machine Guns in the War

PK series of machine guns developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, who is more widely known for the AK-47/AKM family of assault rifles, has been a common sight throughout many conflicts following its introduction, and the war in Ukraine is no exception. The machine gun chambered in 7.62x54 mmR ammunition can be used by infantry or mounted on platforms (Vehicles, tripods, helicopters...).

Both sides are using the machine gun in large numbers as what can be called a main service machine gun. While Ukraine has received various NATO-standard medium machine guns, PK remains the preferred weapon due to its availability, firepower, and cost.
