US Air Force Tests GBU-38 JDAM in Sweden for NATO Readiness TurDef

The United States Air Force (USAF) tested on March 11, 2025, a GBU-38 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) in Sweden. The test follows Sweden's integration into NATO's defensive posture after the alliance's entrance.

The test was a component of Exercise VIKING NEbula, a cooperative initiative to improve the interoperability of US and Swedish military. The drill shows how the high precision strike capability of NATO-aligned air forces may be used in Northern Europe. Given Sweden's geopolitical posture and increasing participation in NATO's collective defence, such drills are vital for regional security.

GBU-38 JDAM: A Precision Munition

Developed by Boeing, the GPS-guided munition kit transforms unguided bombs into all-weather, precision-strike GBU-38 JDAM ammunition.  This technology allows high-Precision strikes on strategic targets while minimising collateral damage.

Expanding Military Cooperation

Since formally joining NATO, Sweden has heightened collaborative military operations with US and European partners.  The latest test underlines Sweden's growing involvement in collective security projects, especially in terms of incorporating modern airstrike capability.

This test consists of a sequence of NATO-led military exercises aiming to enhance European defence infrastructure, guarantee fast-response capabilities, and combat developing threats. The US dedication to Swedish military integration supports NATO's collective deterrent posture in view of changing security issues in the area.
