Emphasising that the matter affects the whole continent, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has advised European countries to increase their defence responsibilities and improve collective security. Starmer underlined in The Telegraph the need to achieve long-lasting peace in Ukraine to stop more Russian aggression.
Starmer said that European stability depends on guarantees of Ukraine's sovereignty. He underlined the importance of tight collaboration between Europe and the United States and positioned the United Kingdom as a major facilitator, especially through its leadership in the Ukraine Defence Contact Group.
Starmer wants to make a strong impression on his next trip to Paris: Europe has to give its military obligations priority. He agreed with former US President Donald Trump's need for more European military expenditure, pointing out that although non-US NATO countries had upped their expenditures by 20 per cent over the previous year, more commitment is still required.
According to Starmer, the UK is ready to spearhead initiatives to give Ukraine security assurances, including continuous military funding of £3 billion yearly until at least 2030. He also indicated that his preparedness to send British soldiers was necessary to underline the seriousness of such a choice and its relevance for continental security.
Starmer also emphasised the vital role the US helps play in preventing Russian threats and underlined that long-lasting peace in Europe depends on US security assurance.
Starmer's demand for more European defence expenditure and active engagement in Ukraine's security emphasises the UK's dedication to NATO and collective defence in front of rising geopolitical difficulties.
