CENTCOM unveils first strike-drone force in region TurDef

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has established Task Force Scorpion Strike, the first dedicated one-way attack drone unit in American military history, created only four months after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth directed the Pentagon to rapidly field low-cost strike UAVs. The new formation is designed to deliver expendable, high-impact drones directly to U.S. units operating across the region.

CENTCOM’s move reflects an operational landscape unmatched by any other U.S. command. The Middle East remains the world’s most intense live environment for unmanned warfare, marked by state-linked actors, dense electronic-warfare conditions, real ballistic and cruise-missile engagements and persistent Shahed-style kamikaze drone swarms. Decision cycles often involve high-risk, time-critical operations similar to the strike that targeted Qasem Soleimani.

One missing detail in CENTCOM’s announcement is the exact location of the new unit. The command confirmed the activation took place within the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility but did not identify a host nation. This ambiguity aligns with TFSS’s expected distributed basing model, designed for mobility rather than permanent positioning. Based on current U.S. posture, the most plausible operating points include Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, Iraq’s Al Asad Air Base and the Al-Tanf garrison in Syria, all situated along key axes of escalating drone and missile activity. Qatar’s Al-Udeid Air Base is likely to serve as the administrative hub supporting the unit.

CENTCOM has also emerged as the Pentagon’s leading incubator for unmanned concepts. The command leads U.S. drone experimentation through its current initiatives which include Task Force 99 and MQ-9 modernization programs and expanded surveillance networks across different regions. The operational culture of the command supports Hegseth's directive because it focuses on low-cost systems and swarm tactics and fast acquisition methods.

The activation of Task Force Scorpion Strike marks a structural shift in how the United States prepares to fight in contested environments. Lessons from Ukraine, where drone roles diversified both vertically and horizontally, have reinforced Washington’s view that future conflicts will depend on scalable, attritable UAVs. Establishing the first strike-drone unit in CENTCOM’s area underscores this assessment: the Middle East remains the world’s clearest proving ground for the unmanned battles to come.
