Pentagon Introduces AI-Guided Combat Drones

The Pentagon has launched a major project to build artificial intelligence-guided Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles. Pentagon’s initiative will have a $6 billion budget to introduce at least 1,000 AI-guided drones into the U.S. Air Force. This concept is called “Collaborative Combat Aircraft” (CCA), where AI-guided combat drones will operate alongside manned aircraft. They will provide support for escorts, scouts, or communication relays. It is likely to recall the “Loyal Wingman” concept, but the pivotal shift in military operations comes from how these drones are operated. No human will be in the loop except the pilot in the aircraft. The AI-guided combat Drones and human pilots will collaborate to achieve mission objectives.

Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, General Atomics, and Anduril Industries have joined the fray, competing for contracts that will shape the future of U.S. air combat. This AI-operated drone must fly autonomously, reaching speeds up to 900 km/hour. It must perform complex manoeuvres, provide protection, attack targets, and conduct reconnaissance. The CCA project officially has five competing companies, but the Pentagon expects to award contracts to two companies next summer. These drones will perform tasks beyond the reach of conventional manned fighter jets such as the F-15EX or F-35. Designed to be expendable, these drones may be grounded or destroyed after carrying out a mission or two.
