The Turkish MoD has announced that ROKETSAN has started the delivery of the AKYA 533 mm heavyweight torpedo for the Turkish Navy submarines.
A video shared by the Turkish MoD shows two torpedoes being loaded into the TCG Preveze (S-353) submarine tubes. The submarine conducted a test launch on December 27, 2023, with a hit on the target ship (ex-TCG Gazal, ex-USS Sioux). The test with TCG Preveze, modernised with HAVELSAN’s MÜREN CMS, was important in that it marked the operational capability with a live warhead.
The Turkish Navy will use AKYA on its Gür-class, Preveze, and new Reis submarines (Type-214TN).
Electrically driven counter-rotating propellers propel AKYA and can reach a range of 50 km. The guidance consists of active/passive sonar and fibre-optic cable, which provides increased resistance to countermeasures by allowing the operator to act.
Heavy torpedoes are a submarine’s main offensive system, and nationalising such systems provides the advantage of independence in acquisition and the freedom to make necessary adjustments based on feedback.
