Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Albares stated that the whole of Europe is under threat and that European Union should implement common defence project.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares spoke to Spanish “El Pais”. The minister said, “The threat is directed at Europe, not a specific country. Therefore, the reaction must be specific to Europe,” and emphasized that it is time to implement the EU’s common defence project.
Sharing the view that “We cannot theorize forever, we must take action,” Albares noted that the financing issue for implementing the EU’s common defence project should also be specific to Europe and that “there are different paths worth exploring.”
Jose Manuel Albares pointed out that not every country can undertake the same level of increase in defence spending in its national budget, and that there must be a certain percentage of reciprocity in terms of defence and security.
The Spanish Minister said, “Europe is more necessary than ever. Now is Europe’s time. “We must act to ensure our security, the defence component, the competitiveness of our companies and the defence of the single market.”
Albares responded to a question about the verbal exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump at the White House:
“Spain supports Ukraine and President Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian people can count on Spain’s support. They are not alone. We are with them.”
