The U.S. Sent an LOA for the F-35 Lightning II to Greece

The U.S. sent the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) regarding the F-35 Lightning II aircraft supply to Greece. The Ministry of National Defence announced that the U.S. authorities sent the Letter of Offer and Acceptance to the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDAEE) regarding the supply of F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The Defence And Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on January 2024 that it had sent to Congress for approval the sale of 40 F-35 Lighting II fighter jets at a potential cost of $8.6 billion. Upon receiving the letter, a 60-day countdown commences until the related contracts are signed. The interstate agreement (FMS) is anticipated to be completed before the European elections, as the LOA expires on June 9. The Hellenic Air Force will acquire its initial two F-35 aircraft in 2028. The total cost of the acquisition project is estimated to be 3.2 billion euros, with the delivery of the 20 F-35 fighter jets scheduled to be completed by 2035. Greece has already received 18 Rafale aircraft, with the remaining six anticipated before 2024. The Hellenic Air Force is also getting updated F-16 jet fighters to the Viper level, with delivery slated to be completed by 2028.
