Ukraine Prepares for Unmanned Systems Forces

Following its rapid gain of experience with unmanned systems during the war, Ukraine is preparing to form an Unmanned Systems Force. The Ukrainian Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov, officially announced the plan to establish an Unmanned Systems Force, as reported by Ukraine-based TCH. Rustem Umerov made the following statement regarding establishing Unmanned Systems Forces: “The main thing is for people to understand: any war is a war of capabilities. We currently have the capability. The President has signed a decree on establishing the Unmanned Systems Command, and we, in turn, use drones for reconnaissance and bombing to defend the country.” Ukraine has demonstrated its technological prowess by developing a wide array of UAVs, USVs, and UGVs, which were swiftly deployed in the war. The establishment of a joint command could potentially enhance the coordination and management of these vehicles’ acquisition and logistics. Ukrainian forces have already developed tactics and strategies with unmanned systems. For example, UAV operators have started deploying signal-repeating UAVs to act as communications nodes for their kamikaze UAVs, and USV operators have devised saturation tactics to overwhelm Russian warships’ defences.
